Product Description: This reproduction Victoria Shilling is moulded directly from an original coin and is made from lead-free pewter. The wallet type packaging has a hole on the front in which the coin is held in a clear blister. The coin pack has an image of Queen Victoria on the front, the two coins in the collection inside, as well as additional Victorian images. It has historical information about the coins and about Victoria.

Information: The “Old Head” was introduced to gold and silver coinage in 1893 and to bronze coins in 1895. On the obverse of the shilling is the veiled “Old Head” of Queen Victoria. The reverse depicts three shields and a garter.

Victoria was born on 24 May 1819 and succeeded to the throne at the age of 18. In 1840 Victoria married Prince Albert with whom she enjoyed 20 years of marriage. Upon Albert’s death she withdrew from public life and remained in mourning for 11 years. Coaxed back into her public role, she became a much-loved and respected monarch.

During Victoria’s reign, Britain had become the world’s first and most powerful industrial nation. To celebrate, the Great Exhibition was held in 1851. It was the world’s first international exhibition and was held in London’s Hyde Park at the Crystal Palace. From 1st May to its closure on 15th October, more than six million people visiting the exhibition.

The Victorian period was an age of discoveries in engineering, medicine and science. Famous figures of the time include the mechanical and civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the novelist Charles Dickens and the naturalist Charles Darwin.

Victoria died at Osbourne House, Isle of Wight, on 22 January 1901. She had ruled for 64 years, enjoying the longest reign of any Monarch. Her son Edward VII became successor to the throne.
