Information: Gladiators were both professional and amateur fighters in ancient Rome. They were generally condemned criminals, prisoners of war or slaves bought for the purpose, but some free men and women also became gladiators.

The Praetorian Guard was an elite unit of the Roman army. During the era of the Roman Republic, the Praetorians served as a small escort force for high-ranking officials. With the Republic’s transition into the Roman Empire the first emperor, Augustus, founded the Guard as his personal security detail.

The Roman legionary was a professional heavy infantryman of the Roman army. Legionaries had to be Roman citizens and were well trained, very disciplined and well armed. They were the heart of the army and bore the brunt of battle. They fought as part of a Legion consisting of around 5,000 men.

A signifier was a standard bearer of the Roman legions. He carried a signum (standard) that was the military emblem of that unit. The task of carrying the signum in battle was dangerous, as the soldier had to stand in the first rank and could only carry a small shield. If the signifier was lost in battle, the whole unit was dishonoured.
