Gaius Julius Caesar July 12 or July 13, c.100 BC – March 15, 44 BC, was a Roman military and political leader and one of the most influential men in world history. He played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.

Caesar was a military genius and his conquest of Gaul extended the Roman world all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. He made two military expeditions to Britain but withdraw each time. In 55 BC he landed with two legions in Kent but quickly returned to Gaul (France). In 54 BC he again landed, this time with five legions and 2000 cavalry, and succeeded in crossing the Thames before withdrawing.

Unhappy with Caesar’s reforms Marcus Junius Brutus conspired with others to murder the dictator and restore the Republic. The assassination occurred on March 15th in 44 BC and led to another civil war.

In July 44 BC, the month of Caesar’s birth, a comet appeared over a stadium where games were being held in his honour. The comet came to be regarded as a sign of Julius Caesar’s deification.
